What Every Business Needs

There are certain tasks, strategies, and tools to be used that are the same for every business. One of the biggest mistakes a lot of business owners make is thinking their business is different. Every business needs a way to generate leads, build relationships, and make a profit. Whether you are a dentist, realtor, brick and mortar store, butcher, baker or candlestick maker … you need those three things at a minimum. You will also need systems – follow-up system, referral system, a documented sales process, and sales/marketing funnels. And I will have future articles on each of them. But for this article, we will focus on leads, relationships, and profit along with the tools you need make everything work.

Email marketing. Email marketing is one of the first tools I recommend for any business. Even though email open rates are going down, email marketing is still one of the most effective ways for any business to grow their list. I’m not referring to email you send through Outlook or Mac Mail. You’ll want to use a professional email service provider, such as Constant Contact, Aweber, Mailchimp or any of the available options. I personally use Constant Contact because I like the ease of use and being able to get support on the phone if I have a question. Website. Your website needs to be a lead generation website. By that I mean you should have an email capture form on each page so anyone visiting your website will have the option of giving you their email address in exchange for valuable information that will help the in their business or in their life. Basically, you will create a free report or some other “lead magnet” and give it to them for free in exchange for their email address.

Social Media. Social media is constantly changing, but it’s not going away anytime soon. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram are the main platforms you will want to consider for your social media strategy. The best way to implement your social media strategy is to pick one platform where your target market is located and get that one working for you before setting up another.

Video. The key players at this time for online video are YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook Live, and Periscope. YouTube and Vimeo are video delivery services while Facebook Live and Periscope are live streaming services. The good news about video is you do not need a lot of equipment. If you have a smart phone, you can make a great video. And there is free software you can use to edit your video, such as iMovie on a Mac.

Direct Response Marketing. Direct response marketing is running a promotion either online or offline that requires whoever sees the promotion to give a direct response. For example, you could run an ad in a local newspaper or magazine. (Yes people still read them and they work very well if done properly.) Here is how it will work. In the ad, you will have a strong call to action with a hyperlink that directs the reader to a landing page or to your website where they enter their email address to get your free report, ebook, or other valuable information. This is an example of driving from offline to online where you collect their information and follow up with them on a consistent basis. Direct response marketing should be a part of all your marketing efforts both online and offline.

Great copywriting (or sales copy) on your website, social media, video scripts, landing pages, blog posts, etc. The one skill you need to learn above everything else in your business is copywriting. Even if you are not the one doing the actual writing, it will be in your best interest to at least have a basic understanding so you will recognize great copy when you see it. Think about all the places where you need good copy – website, social media, blog, video script, direct mail campaigns, and more. All successful business owners either know how to do copywriting themselves or they have great copywriters working for them.
